The mission of DCH Preschool is to foster the growth and development of young children by providing a play-based, developmentally appropriate and nurturing environment that will pave the way for a lifelong love of learning.

The DCH Preschool has a professional staff dedicated to providing creative learning and play while overseeing the physical safety and emotional and intellectual growth of the children.

We serve children 15 months old through Kindergarten.

A typical day at the Dedham Community House Preschool

Our program is designed to provide a stimulating, creative and supportive environment that is aligned with state standards. Children are encouraged to grow at their own pace while developing feelings of security, success and self-confidence.

The teaching staff uses themes to develop curriculum that is developmentally appropriate and focuses on the emotional, social, cognitive and physical development of each child.

Each classroom’s daily schedule is planned to meet the needs of the children within the group. All groups offer a variety of quiet and active play options to ensure a balanced program.

Free Choice: Play options include dramatic play, small manipulatives (puzzles, Legos, construction toys), art activities, sensory activities (play dough, sand and water play), science experimentation, cooking projects, large muscle equipment and books. Play clothes are encouraged.

Group Time: Group time includes sharing, stories, musical experiences and games. Children are encouraged to express themselves, to listen and to cooperate in taking turns. The duration and content varies depending on the age group.

Snacks & Lunch: Mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks are scheduled in each classroom daily, in addition to lunch. Families provide all food for their children and the DCH Preschool provides water. The DCH Preschool is a peanut and tree nut free school.

Outside Activities: Weather permitting, children have the opportunity to play outside on the playground daily. Opportunities for climbing, running, swinging and sand play are available.

Music & Movement: Music and movement are a regular part of the preschool curriculum. The teaching staff includes singing, dance and movement in the classroom curriculum. In addition, the program includes monthly visits from such early childhood specialists as Be Ahead of the Game and ABC-Spanish in Motion. The Tumble Bus visits our toddler classes during cold weather months.

Licensing and Accreditation

The DCH Preschool is licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care, a state agency. The preschool is licensed for 65 children aged 15 months to 6 years old and is relicensed every two years.

The school is actively pursuing level 2 of the nationwide QRIS rating system for early childhood education. QRIS is a continuous quality improvement cycle that helps preschool programs identify strengths and areas of potential growth.
